4 Uncommon Road Trip MUST haves

Absolute Non-Negotiables

Travel items so good, you’ll end up buying them on the road.

You’ve hit the road, all the standard gear in tow. After a little bit of travelling around, you really get selective on the things that are non-negotiable.

Here’s my list of selectively cultivated items that I most definitely won’t leave home without…

Slides, not thongs, slides

Slides are a game changer. Climb mountains, hike beaches, public showers (fk tinea).
Give them a rinse and they’re ready for what tomorrow throws.

Absolute best part is no blow outs and no rubbing between your big toe and second toe.

Just watch your tan lines. It’s a nice rectangle shape on your instep, which has to be sexier than thong tan lines?

The ever so trusty slides.

Phone mount

No head unit, no worries. The Kmart phone mount kept up with most corrugations when whacked into the aircon grills. In saying that, the longest track was about 15-20km, so for longer stretches it might need something more sturdy.

Regardless, a good phone mount will keep your eyes up where they need to be.

2 water tanks

1 water tank for washing, typically a large one (40L+) and a second one for drinking from. I rate the Supermarket 10L tanks, they’re a good size that give a couple days of water.

Why do I separate? Well, home is where the water tastes good. So if your water tastes good everywhere, you’re always at home.

2 microfibre towels

Hear me out, for those not sold on microfibre, I wasn’t either.

Yes the feeling made me dry reach too, gripping to your skin like you’re human velcro. I persisted and I’m glad I did.

The space saved from microfibre towels is a game changer.

Plus they dry in about 87 seconds in the sun.

Why 2? 1 for showers, 1 for the beach. No sand in my shower towel, no way Jose.

Not so Non-Negotiables

These aren’t so non negotiable but, I am certainly doing my best to make space (always space for these tbh)

Weber Baby Q

I love my food. I love being able to cook whatever pops into my head. A weber allows me to do that and some.

It literally does everything, besides boil water efficiently, which the little propane gas stoves sort out anyway.

It’s a BBQ, oven and fry pan all in one. The best bit is, it uses fk all gas.

A 4 kg bottle was just about done after 3 months-ish on the road, using it every night for dinner bar about 5 days.

Hot water system

Little bit soft here, but hot showers do not go a stray on chilly nights. Ya boy needs a shower before bed, this saved me from the absolute last resort baby wipe shower.

I’m all for it, especially down south for the chilly days and nights.

Up north it stays packed up a little more, particularly on the east coast. Showers are fairly common at the surfing hotspots.

Beach Chair

A half folding beach chair is the ducks nuts for days on the sand. Especially if you want to prop yourself up for a bit of reading. Love it.

Side note, I absolutely love the reclining chair.

Eat dinner on it, then back all the way and watch the stars.

Ahhh how goods livin’.
